We all know that buying Christmas gifts for the person that seems to already have everything can be hard, so we’ve decided to help.
In order to make this list useful, there are some glaring omissions. The biggest of them all is the massively popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Discarding the fact that I’m personally not a fan of the Call of Duty series, the reality is the fact that pretty much everyone who likes first person shooters already owns that game. You don’t want to be the one who buys someone something that they’ve already got, right?
Also worth noting is that I tend to say “it depends” in my recommendations for a few things in recognition of the fact that not everyone’s situation is the same. For example, I would not recommend buying any Call of Duty game unless your gift recipient has access to the internet through their consoles and an online gaming account.
Accessories is another factor. An example of this would be buying a Kinect game when that person doesn’t actually have a Kinect. Although this may sound silly, relatives of mine have done exactly this – it is a very serious first world problem.
And as a word of advice – check first and foremost that you are buying a game for the right system, otherwise your gift recipient might be like this.
So, last minute idea hunters, here’s my list of recommended games and any peripherals/extras you might need to play them.
Ideal for older people/teenagers. I would also recommend having a connection to the internet for this game but not a paid subscription (such as Xbox Live Gold subscription) – this is because when this game first hit store shelves it was fairly buggy and new updates were made available online to help improve overall game performance. It’s a gem now.
No peripherals required.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Recommended for people above the ages of 12ish and only for Xbox 360 owners. Skyrim has had some very crippling issues on the PlayStation 3 which may never be fixed according to some game developers. It’s highly possible that the extreme gamer already has this – you might want to consider this for the kind of person who is an interested gamer but not an intense one, as it will end up being the most wicked gift for that kind of person. The extreme gamer might have to smile politely and say ‘thanks’, then have to sell it on eBay. It sold a hell of a lot of copies at launch.
This game does not require any other peripherals or connections to the internet. It is a massive game and will provide many hours for fun for just about anyone.
This game is probably the pick of Kinect games released this year. It is fun, accurate in its motion sensing and pretty easy to play as well as being fun for pretty much everyone in the family.
For anyone who has a love of muck-around-racing and not competitive racing. No peripherals required.
For anyone who loves competitive racing. I would recommend having an Xbox Live Gold subscription for this game so your loved one can race against people all over the world. However, it is not absolute necessary and this game can be quite enjoyable without it.
The ideal game for those who have a PlayStation 3, want a new shooter and have been playing Killzone 3 for the last 6 months straight. This game also has 3D capabilities and motion controls with the optionalMove add-on, which can make for an impressive gift. It is not necessary to own a Move but it may prove to be fun for some.
This game is not recommended to people under 12.
For those who own a Xbox 360 and would like a non-military game and is not stereotypically set in modern day Russia or a Middle Eastern country or something.
Gears of War 3 is a 3rd person shooter and is very fun. An Xbox Live Gold Account is not required but is recommended, as playing online is very fun and addictive. Mums – this is a great game for your boys (unless they are under the age of 12!)
This is another one of those games that the extreme gamer might already have and the casual gamer might not. For someone who is getting their first console or doesn’t really own many games, this one will be the perfect gift.
Another racing game for all the family to enjoy. I would recommend anto play against other people online but it is not required.
This game is recommended to sports buffs in general and specifically for those who(or Soccer in Australia). This is the best out and the best FIFA to date.
Batman: Arkham City
This game is highly recommended for anyone over the age of 12 but especially for those who love comic books, comic book movies or have comic book related clothing. This game was written by Paul Dini who has written some of the Batman comic book series – a fun fact that will make you sound super impressive on Christmas Day. Also, those who love stealth related games will love this one.
In short, this game is quite epic to say the least.
This game is recommended to those of who love epic first person shooters as well as those who hate shooters but have an epic PC – if you’re looking to find the ideal gift alongside that new laptop or gaming console, this is a good first game for someone to receive. This game is pretty much for any male – and if you are a woman with a male in your famil,y chances are you have probably heard of this game. You can’t possibly give this game as a gift and feel like your present was a dud.
Note: this game REQUIRES the internet!
Saints Row the Third
This game is recommended for anyone above the age of 15. It has many ludicrous things in it which are too rude to even mention in this article (let’s just say it starts with ‘G’ and ends in ‘iant purple dildo’).
However this game is incredibly fun and no extras, peripherals or internet connections is required to play this game and enjoy it to the max. If the person you’re thinking of has a bit of a warped sense of humour, they’ll love getting this game as a gift.
Assassins Creed: Revelation
Again, another game for those who love stealth and hand to hand non-shooting combat. This game is quite good but not for the younger ones. No extras required.
Here’s the best way to think of this title: if the person you’re thinking of already has the new Batman game, use this game as your backup. In fact, if that person has the Batman game, it means that this game will be just the kind of thing they like and you come off looking like an awesome gift giver.
Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception
Recommended for anyone who owns a PlayStation 3 and for anyone who has enough money to buy a PlayStation 3 and this game. Be warned though: PS3 owners are highly likely to already have this, so be sure to double check their game catalogue if you’re considering this one.
Uncharted 3 is truly a very good looking game as well as very fun. If you’re looking to hit the jackpot in giving an extremely awesome gift, this game will get any PS3 owner hot and heavy with excitement.
An internet connection is not vital but would help a lot with this game as there is an online multiplayer component which is a hell of a lot of fun.
This game is recommended for those who are obessed with role playing games (RPG’s) like Warcraft, etc. If you don’t know what an RPG is, chances are neither is anyone in your family. RPG’s are an acquired taste – people either love them or hate them. If they love them, though, this is the kind of game to get. Just be careful in making sure this style of game is what they like to play – strategy, less action and more planning, etc.
Other cheaper options released earlier this year
You could expect to find any of these games under $50 but be warned: the longer a game has been on the market, the more likely it is that someone already has it or has played it.
Mass Effect 2 – This is an incredible game with many hours worth of epic fun only about 20 dollars or less. No extras required.
Dead Space 2 – A gory game for older people which can be bought cheaply. No extra required.
Killzone 3 – One of the best first person shooters ever made on the PlayStation 3. An internet connection is highly recommended to play online multiplayer.
Mortal Kombat – One of the best arcade fighting games in my opinion to date.
L.A. Noire – For all the detective-y people who want a mix up from the traditional shooters and RPG’s. This game, for better or for worse, is like nothing you have ever played. It’ll work well as a gift that has a lot of gameplay value whilst being cheaper than some of the more recent releases listed in above.
Catherine – For all the manga/anime loving weirdos. Seriously.
