Vodafone are finally dropping the act and are phasing out the HTC Desire HD

Check out this post on OzBargain – Vodafone are selling off their very last batch of HTC Desire HD handsets for $0 upfront on a $29 plan over 24 months.

That’s a curious deal considering the fact that at those prices, the Desire HD is priced to sell (read: being liquidated), despite the fact that Vodafone have stocked this phone over the past year and a bit like it was one of their best sellers.

And that is interesting in itself, considering that when the Desire HD first went on sale in Australia, Vodafone claimed that they only had one shipment of 5,000 units coming to Australia and that they were not going to restock it. The phone almost immediately sold out of the initial shipment as a result.

That’s the headline that The Verge are running today. Astonishing.

So the question needs to be asked: Have HTC really gotten this far without focusing on the product? Does that explain why my Desire HD is so average?

It’s pretty funny when HTC decides to take the fight to Apple and all the iDevice maker has to say is this:

Apple denies that its correct name is Apple, Inc. The correct name of Respondent is Apple Inc.

That’s power, bitches.

The tech blogosphere is crapping on and on about this recent deal that HTC did to invest in the business that sells the “Beats by Dr Dre” brand, waiting with bated breath for the first “Beats by Dr Dre” phone.

And now, it looks like they might get it real soon – the HTC Vigor.

Last week, HTC started making good on its promise to distribute updates to their line of ‘Desire‘ handsets to the latest version of Android by sending out an OTA (over the air) update to the HTC Desire HD – a phone sold exclusively by Vodafone in Australia. I own one of those handsets (see the review here) and decided to give the update a run and post about my experiences with it.

As an Australian having only recently started writing for Business Insider as a contributor, I’ve noticed a big difference from the readers that I’m used to writing for – the international audience of the site seems to have a much higher expectation that a sarcastic comment is in fact a derogatory one.

Now, this isn’t a knock on anybody by any means – if anything, it is an acknowledgement from myself that you guys haven’t appreciated some of the things that I’ve said. I see your point of view and I’ll be taking it under advisement.

Only Apple could sign a components deal with a company that could finance a small country and then sue the pants off of them to try and disrupt their whole retail strategy.

With the latest news that Apple and Samsung are now engaged in a mud-slinging match in courtroom theatre for our entertainment over the next few years, I can’t help but feel that Apple not only just demonstrated once again how they are taking the rest of the world to school on how to run a modern IT business but how this move will reset the landscape for mobile phone releases over the next few years – it’s a big deal.

Most interesting of all, unlike a lot of the spit fighting amoungst mobile vendors that is happening right now, I think Apple have a case with this one and in this article I’ll attempt to decipher what their true intentions might be and how this is likely to all shake out.

Let’s look at all the notables leading up to this point:

I had previously mentioned on this site that the HTC Desire Z was going to be a Vodafone exclusive, but now Gizmodo have learned that the phone will launch in Australia in about a week’s time or so.

That’s pretty cool… it’ll be interesting to see how well the phone does considering it’s basically an HTC Desire HD with a keyboard tacked on. Personally, I think it’s a blockbuster and we’ll find out once and for all just how much people hate Vodafone to want to resist staying away from this thing.

We’ll see.
