… The Blackberry Playbook by your friends at Research In Slow Motion.

Now this is an award that the public got right.  The Playbook was so embarrassingly poor in quality that it seemed almost like a bad dream that the company actually had the balls to release this product this year and not think that they would be bagged out something chronic for doing so.

Chromebooks came a very close second and were a worthy mention, I must say.  With the nominees on the list, I expected a few others to rank higher than Google‘s netbook format but clearly you guys thought that the idea sucked just about as much as I did.  How pleasing.

Apple Inc.

Apple.

Oh man, I can just feel the hate raining down from Apple fanboys everywhere that this site is once again crowning Apple with the Biggest Piece of Shit of the Year award. In 2010, there was a three-way tie in which both the iPhone 4 and iTunes were co-winners.

Of course, there was a strong case to be made for Apple this year, of which you can read all about by following this link. The company was constantly late with releasing products, disappointed their customers with barely incremental updates and lied to the public about what they were up to. These are the kind of things that Apple are going to have to try to keep evading in the future now that they are without their spiritual leader, Steve Jobs, who passed away late 2011.

It’s that time of year again where we look at the hopes and dreams of the IT industry in the new year, crush the rhetoric and break it down into what will actually happen.

2012 should be really interesting because all eyes will be on this “post-PC” talk that will carry over into the new year, now that Microsoft will be equipped with the kind of operating systems that can power tablets and smartphones in a way that they previously sucked at pretty hard.  Sure, Windows Phone launched in 2010, but it has only been since Mango came to the party and Nokia and Samsung signed agreements to become mega-hardcore WinPhone hawkers that we will really see any sort of serious challenge to Android and iOS.  That war will finally get interesting.

There’s a wide spread of nonsense in IT at the moment too – so without further delay, let’s jump right in with two feet and talk about what is likely to happen in 2012:

As we all know, Sonys newest handheld the PlayStation Vita is being launched soon in Japan and is slated for February everywhere else in the world.

This handheld has probably as much, if not more hype around it than any other dedicated gaming device not created by Apple and this is for good reason.

The PlayStation Vita is one of the first handheld devices that has a quad core CPU (the ASUS Transformer Prime also has one of these). As a result, Sony have said that this will produce PlayStation 3-like graphics which will be amazing on a handheld device.

There is a problem with this, however.

Anonymous and LulzSec – freedom fighters turned prison bitches (BPOSOTY 2011)

Risking a hacking retaliation from script kiddies and other socially inept computer enthusiasts, hacking groups Anonymous and LulzSec (who are said to have a number of members who have been in both groups) make a joint nomination as one of the biggest pieces of shit of the year.

Why? There’s no long and convoluted reasoning to this nomination but rather a simple one: the things that they have done and the services they have taken down have been disruptive and irritating.

Sure, Sony are idiots who underestimated their online security but the takedown of the PSN this year for over a month was heartbraking for many PS3 owners who love nothing more than to relax with their favourite game and play online with their friends. There were the hacking of US state of Arizona’s police department, attacks against the US FBI and PayPal which made websites inaccessible and the millions of dollars wasted by many other companies who had to pay for repairing the damage left behind to their services. That cost was then either passed on to the customer or taken away from employees in the form of pay cuts or job losses.

Best of all, there were all the threats that were all smoke and no fire. The takedown of Facebook on Nov 5? Didn’t happen. The World War 3 ‘open war’ declaration against all governments, banks and big corporations? Meh. The effing up of the Mexican drug cartel? They backed dowm on that one when the cartel murdered a blogger to show that they are people who should not be messed with.

I read a few of the entries on PasteBin by these people and the tone of the written pieces just reeled of immaturity. At some point, you stopped disliking this people and just felt really sorry for them.

The golden rule is that the best and most elite hackers in the world are the ones that you’ve never heard of before or even know exist. True hackers are ‘actually’ anonymous. These guys? It all seems to be one big desperate attempt for attention to me.

Of course, a few of these guys have been busted already and their bragging on IRC, amoungst other things, were the reason why the authorities found them. As a result, these indisputably brilliant minds will be spending their days being someone’s bitch in prison where pawning is dished out by the men, not the boys. It’s a totally different kind of Lulz fest.

Good riddance guys. Don’t forget to drop the soap.

Sony – the company your mother could hack (BPOSOTY 2011)

This is a company that doesn’t need much justification for being nominated for the Biggest Piece of Shit of the Year Award considering the problems that they have had this year.

For starters, you need to look no further than the shumozzle with the PlayStation Network. Hacked, down for over a month and then hacked again.

Then the hacks kept coming – 20 of them in fact. It got so bad that it seemed like every single Sony online property was half-baked and totally sucked from a security standpoint. It got to the point that you had to feel surprised that management remembered to lock the front doors at night.

Even worse, Sony’s way of saying sorry was a half-arsed gift if you could barely call it that.

Then of course, Sony’s entire business has been in the toilet the whole year. Their television set business loses money -  Sony televisions are way more expensive than their competitors – and many other things have experienced price cuts, such as the PlayStation 3, in order to drive up adoption.

Mobile phones? Sony has sat on its hands all year, released butt-ugly devices and have inky finally bought out Ericsson from their joint partnership so that they can get started trying to matter. As of now, they are only four years behind the iPhone now.

Oh and the company’s latest handheld gaming unit? It’s skipping Christmas due to a delayed launch and handing all of the holiday sales to Apple, again.

If this company wins the award, they’ll not only be the biggest piece of shit but a bunch of douchebags too.
